David Smout – Director and Occupational Therapist

David is a qualified Occupational Therapist who graduated from Curtin University in Western Australia in 2014. He has been practising in the ACT region since 2015 and brings broad experience across both paediatric and adult occupational therapy.

In his work with children, David adopts a developmental, play-based approach to therapy. This model uses play as the primary medium to support a child’s development in key areas including motor skills, sensory processing, social interaction, and problem-solving. Through engaging, meaningful activities, David aims to create a safe and motivating environment where children can develop skills naturally through exploration, creativity, and imagination. This approach supports children to participate more fully in everyday activities and to reach their developmental potential.

When working with adults, David focuses on supporting individuals to live safely, independently, and with the highest possible quality of life. His experience includes assistive technology (AT) assessments to identify and prescribe appropriate equipment, minor home modifications to improve safety and accessibility, functional capacity assessments to inform care planning and NDIS reviews, and tailored therapy programs to build or maintain everyday functional skills. David’s practice emphasises practical, personalised solutions that enhance independence and make daily activities more manageable and meaningful.
